Blueprint-funded La Jolla Neuroscience Center Cores play a critical role in the advancement of neuroscience research in San Diego and environs.  These services allow neuroscientists to take advantage of sophisticated technologies available across all 4 institutions.

BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES

TSRI Behavioral Sciences

The Behavioral Core provides mouse behavioral assessments to allow investigators to make transitions from laboratory findings to clinical applications by enabling the modeling of human diseases and the development of medications and other treatment strategies.

Bioinformatics

BIMR Bioinformatics  |  Salk Bioinformatics

The Bioinformatics Core operates two facilities: Bioinformatics Facility at Salk, which specializes in gene promoter and evolutionary sequence analysis, and B) Bioinformatics at BIMR that emphasizes structural biology, gene and miRNA expression profiling and proteomics.

Cell Imaging and Histology

BIMR Cell Imaging    |   BIMR Histology

The Cell Imaging and Histology Core consists of two interconnected facilities located at BIMR: the Cell Imaging Facility, which provides expert services enabling imaging experiments on a wide range of microscope imaging systems, and the Histology Facility, which provides access, training and services in tissue processing, histology, immunohistochemistry and neurohistopathology. The two facilities share adjacent space on the BIMR campus and an integrated management hierarchy.

Chemical Library Screening

The Chemical Library Screening core offers high-throughput screening (HTS) of biochemical and cell-based array using traditional HTS readouts and automated microscopy for high-content screening (HCS)>  These facilities also offer array development and screening, as well as cheminformatics and medicinal chemistry.

Electrophysiology

BIMR Electrophysiology    |    Salk Electrophysiology

The Electrophysiology Core consists of two facilities. Salk Electrophysiology Facility and Burnham Electrophysiology Facility. Both facilities can perform patch-clamp intracellular and extracellular field recordings on a range of material including cultured cells and brain slices.  The Salk facility emphasizes acute and cultured brain slices as well as cultured cells, whereas the BIMR facility emphasizes electrophysiological analysis of cultured cells and the detailed electrical properties of channels, receptors and recombinant proteins expressed in  Xenopus oocytes or mammalian cells.

Gene Analysis

BIMR Gene Analysis DNA Analysis   |    Microarray/qPCR    |     Salk Microarray

The Gene Analysis Core has two facilities: Gene Analysis Facility at BIMR that provides DNA sequence analysis, PCR-genotyping, quantitative PCR and Illumina microarray analysis, and the Microarray Facility at Salk, that offers Affymetrix microarray analysis, quantitative PCR, and automated plasmid preparation.

Flow Cytometry

BIMR Flow Cytometry

The Flow Cytometry core provides analytical cytometry and high speed flow sorting of labeled cells.

Neuropathology

UCSD Neuropathology

The Neuropathology  laboratory applies immunocytochemistry, neurochemistry, molecular genetics, transgenic models of disease, and imaging by scanning laser confocal microscopy to analysis of neurological disease in animal models.

Proteomics

The Proteomics Core has three facilities: Proteomics at BIMR, Mass Spectrometry Facility at Salk, and Proteomics at TSRI.  The three facilities bring a wide range of complementary services to Blueprint investigators.

Stem Cell

BIMR Stem Cell    |     Salk Stem Cell

The Stem Cell Core operates out of two facilities:  Stem Cell Facility at BIMR that focuses on hESCs and hESC-derived neural progenitor cells and the Stem Cell Facility at Salk that emphases neural stem cells and their differentiated derivatives.

Structural Biology

Salk Structural Biology    X-Ray    |     Nuclear Magnetic Facility

The Structural Biology Core has two facilities: Structural Biology Facility at BIMR that offers X-ray Crystallography, NMR Spectroscopy, and Protein Production, and Structural Biology Facility at Salk that also provides X-ray crystallography and NMR Spectroscopic analyses of biological macromolecules.

Viral Vectors and Functional Genomics

The Viral Vectors and Functional Genomics Core has three facilities: Viral Vector Facility at Salk, specializing in very high titer lentivirus and recombinant adeno-associated virus, and in design and construction of lentiviral vectors to deliver shRNAs ; Viral Vector facility at BIMR, specializing in lentiviral and adenoviral vector construction and preparation; and Functional Genomics at BIMR, specializing in automated high throughput microRNA and siRNA oligonucleotide screening.
